phenomenal Sound and uncomplicated to Set Up : Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System

As of 5/29/11 (After using theory for 2 weeks)

Let me begin by saying that this Onkyo Home Theater theory is the first surround sound theory that I have ever owned. I am not what one would call an "audiophile". So if you're looking for a more in-depth, technical review, I can't help you.

I was surprised when the huge Ht-S5400 box arrived at my house. The speakers, sub-woofer, and receiver were all a lot bigger than I opinion they would be. After being briefly overwhelmed, I got to work setting up the theory and closed faster than expected.

Although I am a beginner, I found this theory genuinely easy to set up. The wires are all color-coded and installing the surround speakers is simple. There is no need for mounts or brackets and you can let the speakers hang on a nail or screw. This gives it a clean look. There are 4 Hdmi slots are enough for your Blu-ray players, cable boxes, game consoles, and any other media players. I didn't know how to set up the sound levels for each private speaker but the Audyssey function did this for me. I just had to do some minor tweaking afterwards.

I've tested the theory for two weeks now and it sounds great with Dvds, Blu-rays, music, and videogames. I watched Inception and How to Train Your Dragon on blu-ray and the sound completely blew me away. Even the slightest movie noise comes through crisp and clear. And at less that half the max volume, my floor was already rumbling. I also tried it on an old favorite, Firefly, and it felt like a whole new experience. I don't think there is a presume to spend more money on a more costly theory unless you genuinely can hear the difference. I initially had a qoute with the audio and video popping in and out but I fixed this by replacing my Hdmi cable.

One thing that I did not like about the front and surround speakers is the keystone hole. If you want to angle your surround speakers, you have attach them to a mount. This might be difficult because the depth of the keystone holes is very small so it is hard to get a screw head in there. This qoute also arises when you try to attach the front speakers to a stand. This is a minor issue and can be genuinely remedied.

So to summarize:

Pros
Incredible sound
Really loud
Attractive setup
Simple installation
Plenty of Hdmi imputs as well as component and Av
Audyssey genuinely helps beginners

Cons
Questionable keystone design
Speakers may be a bit large (Front speakers are more than a foot tall)
Can't join together to Hd antennas

Like the other reviewer, I would rate this 4.5 stars if I could. There are minor problems, but overall, I would recommend this to whatever looking to buy a Home Theater in a Box.

    Customer Review :

Great Sound at a great price! : Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System

We were wanting to throw together a sort of "auxiliary" home theater for the kids to give them somewhere to go when they didn't want to be under Mom & Dad's elbows (and vice versa!). While legitimately we wanted gear that would last and achieve well we also had minimal extraneous allocation to work with so we feared the available options would be, well, lacking to say the least.

The entire setup includes a Sony Bravia Kdl-32L5000 32" Lcd, a Sony Dvp-Ns77H upconverting Dvd player, and the kids' Ps2 which still enjoys regular use. The Bravia Lcd was chosen for its connectivity options and the price I found it for just prior to Christmas at our local Wal-Mart. The Dvd player was chosen for its solid reviews, Bravia-Sync capability with Sony flatpanel monitors, as well as price; it was scored in a closeout sale locally.

For sound reproduction for the above display equipment the Sony Str-Dh800 A/V receiver was chosen for its on-board surround decoding options and the capability to control itself (obviously), the Tv, and the Dvd player from a particular remote while negating the necessity for buying a third-party universal remote control. Price again was a factor as I had a merchandise reputation which had been pending for some time with other online retailer and the price I was able to get this particular receiver for after deducting that reputation was all but irresistible.

And last but legitimately not least the Onkyo Sks-Ht540 7.1 surround sound speaker holder was chosen for its 7.1 channel compatibility with 8 detach channels worth of speakers including the active subwoofer, mostly obvious reviews online, and ultimately (our mantra, if you will) price. It was, hands-down, The best available option, both locally and online, for under $240/shipped brand-spankin'-new. Though not an recent model the unbelievable level of doing compared to the cost far outweighed the fact of this option not being the "latest and greatest" thing available. The inclusion of the Sks-Ht540 for this setup in conjunction with the above supporting gear allowed us to faultless our project well under the target allocation even after purchasing all the necessary cabling to tie it all together.

First please let me address a integrate of items contained within the negative recite prominently displayed when you pick the reviews option for this item. That reviewer claims that the speaker cabinets for each of the front three main speakers (front left, town channel, and front right) are a full five inches shallower than the given dimensions as per Onkyo's product description. According to the manufacturer's website each of the large front main speakers have a depth of 7 7/8". My own measurements indicate a depth of 6 1/4" not including the baffle on which the speaker's three detach drivers are mounted or the detachable cloth grilles. including those latter two items gives a determination of a bit over 7" deep. Each of these three cabinets, while not the same exact dimensions indicated by the manufacturer, remains of an suitable size for the type of cabinet used with the definite drivers chosen.

The four surround speakers Are significantly shallower than three front main speakers. However, the surround units use an acoustic suspension alignment (sealed cabinets) as opposed to the bass reflex alignment ("vented" or "ported" cabinets) utilized by the fronts. integrate that with the fact that the drivers in the surround units are both physically smaller (3 1/8th inch mid-woofer Vs. 5" mid-woofer) and numerically smaller (single driver Vs. Dual-driver) than the front anyone with half a clue about speaker enclosure make knows this makes perfect sense.

Additionally the remark about the back panel of the active subwoofer unit displaying a claim of 130w while the product specifications claiming 230 watts of dynamic amplifier output is comparing apples to oranges.

Upon inspection of my own unit I settled a specification on the back panel of the subwoofer indicating operating parameters of 120v A/C current @ 60Hz / 140 watts. This labeling is in compliancy with Underwriter's Laboratories' product listing certification. The 140 watts value has nothing to do with unit output power and is indicative of maximum rated power consumption.
Additionally the 230 watt rating given in the product record Is provided as a "dynamic" output power capability. anyone with half a clue about audio equipment would understand that in reference to amplifier power the terms dynamic, maximum, and peak are generally interchangeable and are values good for nothing more than marketing. These values are normally in no way equal to the "Rms" or "nominal" output wattage which will be a considerably more definite representation of the actual real-world output levels the end user could expect to enjoy. While the actual Rms wattage ratings are not provided for some reckon by Onkyo the 230 watt claim of dynamic power would lead one to believe the Rms figures are more along the lines of somewhere in the middle of 100 and 150 watts. This level of power is perfectly enough for a 10" driver and is a fairly suitable power level for active subwoofers everywhere near this pricepoint.

    "Whew!"

"Having said all of that - how do the blasted things sound?!?"

For the cost complicated they sound legitimately fantastic. Please be aware that I'm fairly discriminatory when it comes to audio gear and the equipment used in our main family room is of a very dissimilar flavor (and pricepoint) than the item currently being reviewed. After running the receiver's auto-calibrate feature and then development some additional tweaks beyond that I was pleasantly surprised at these Onkyos.

During movie playback effects, dialogue, and soundtrack were faithfully reproduced and settled properly. The machine-gun fire beyond Forrest Gump as he is running from the Viet Cong ambush attack was right behind you and the sounds of bullet projectiles ricocheting of off trees is unmistakable. The sounds of things flying apart (cars, military equipment, buildings, etc) during Megatron and Optimus Prime's final fight in The Transformers are enveloping and somewhat frightening! maybe unexpected is a good term here. There is an benefit this Onkyo set has over other sets at (or in many cases significantly above) this price point - the surround speakers, all four of them, are a 2-way make (separate mid-woofer and tweeter) rather than incorporating the particular full-range driver configuration that is found in the majority of entry-level surround groups and a surprising ration of higher-end units!

During music playback the bottom registers of mid-bass did legitimately feel a smidge thin. The bass solo in the live cut of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall, Pt2" on their double-disc 'Pulse' set sounded like it wanted larger drivers reverberating its insistence. The drums in "I Don't Care Anymore" by Genesis sounded slightly far away. Otherwise I found the set right on the money from one end of the audible spectrum to the other. The highs from the floating tweeters in the front mains were captivating without being strained. Midrange vocals sounded true. The bottom octaves being provided by the 10" sub were definite and well-blended.

Even with my minor complaints aside at this price I truly do not think there is a good alternative for a true 7.1 theory available.

The one possible con is simply this setup's size. It will wish a necessary investment in your space's real estate in comparison to other 'compact' surround options. It isn't designed to blend in with your decor like a Bose theory and these speakers are substantially larger than the speakers generally found in an entry-level Home Theater In A Box-type set. Please do recite the dimensions provided by the constructor and know that they are "mostly" definite so keep that in mind when development a buy decision. If you want something easy to tuck away in a angle or hide in a bookcase this Onkyo set is not for you. If you do not mind the necessary space sacrifice and having a 'compact' surround sound set that will still, without a doubt, get noticed, then please give these some consideration for your allocation surround needs.

    Review Edit/Add-On: additional Impressions...

After living with the Onkyo Sks-Ht540 for a bit now and having had the occasion to legitimately get the receiver driving them tweaked to what I believe is the best possible setting(s) in place for various modes I'm additional impressed by this speaker set.

In my haste to get all this gear set up for the kids so I could get them out of our hair, so to speak, I ran the auto-calibrate in the receiver and made additional Eq tweaks to improve the settings put in place by the auto-processing. I did not, however, delve all that deeply into All of the available settings. After digging a bit additional into the receiver's menu buildings I settled some additional adjustments that needed, well, adjusting. After the necessary tweaks were made these Onkyos sound that much good to us all and seriously has the wife questioning the wisdom in having spent as much as we have on our main family home theater!

A integrate of observations - first is the fact that the surrounds on the mid-woofer drivers for the front main and town channel speakers are rubber rather than pressed foam as will be found in most "All-In-One" surround speaker packages in this price-range. This should offer both increased longevity of the speakers extensive as well as give the speakers themselves enhanced control over driver excursion when being pushed to ultimate volumes if that happens to be your thing. I do not have a peak-to-peak excursion determination available but simply watching the speakers move with the naked eye would lead one to believe that woofer tour is legitimately grand for drivers of this size. The number of air being moved straight through the rear-firing port would additional fuel that opinion.

The second consideration brings along with it a word of caution to prospective buyers - these speakers are not particularly efficient. The specs provided by Onkyo indicate a speaker sensitivity for the three front (left/right/center) channel speakers and the four surround speakers to be 86dB and 82dB, respectively. What this means, for those of you whom I am speaking Greek to now, is that these speakers, while rated at 130w maximum input wattage simply will not achieve at optimal levels on lower-powered sources. The receiver we're driving these Onkyos with, as mentioned previously, is a Sony Str-Dh800 which is rated at 100w per output channel and this rating is given at full bandwidth output from 20Hz to 20kHz. Be mindful of receivers whose output ratings are given as "Xxx watts worth of output @ 1kHz" or some other definite frequency rather than the entire range of average human hearing. Receivers rated in this fashion are (generally) not going to offer the same level of output over the entire range of audible frequencies as it does for the definite frequency used for the rating to begin with.

You'll also want to ensure that the wattage output per channel falls somewhere in the upper third of the input rating for these speakers.

All in all? My view that these Onkyos are a fantastic buy at under $250/shipped has not been dulled whatsoever after using them for awhile - pick these up if your living space allows for these to be included as a part!

    3D Technology Checklist

This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use the checklist below to ensure you have everything you need. 3D viewing requires:

    A Display
First, you'll need a 3D-ready display--whether it's a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays have more processing power than standard 2D models for displaying 3D images in rapid succession.
    A Source
Your display may be ready for 3D playback, but you'll still need a device to read 3D content. This can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3 system.
    3D Content
3D content--the actual entertainment, in other words--will be played back using the source mentioned above, whether it's a 3D broadcast from your cable provider, a 3D Blu-ray Disc, or a 3D video game.
    3D Glasses
For now, the vast majority of 3D HDTVs require glasses for 3D viewing. Many use powered "active shutter" glasses, others polarized "passive" glasses. You'll need one pair per viewer, and they'll have to be compatible with your display, whether they're the same brand, or a pair of "universal" glasses designed to work across brands.
    HDMI Cable
To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a high-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation feature bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second), for carrying the 3D signal without any loss of quality.

If you want to get more information about 3D, shop our 3D products, watch videos, or interact with other customers, we invite you to visit 3D 101, our customer center about everything 3D.

    (March 2011)

Step into the 3D World. Watch 3D movies at home with Full HD 3D technology with the SC-BTT370.

FULL HD 3D Blu-ray Disc Playback

Advanced 2D image technology accumulated over the years at the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) has also been applied to 3D image playback, allowing high quality images to approach original film quality. Lifelike 3D images with dramatic leaping effects and enhanced depth, luster and texture are beautifully reproduced.

    3D Effect Controller

The 3D Effect Controller lets you moderate the leaping effects of 3D images. It also lets you adjust the amount of depth, so you can view expansive images and enjoy movies with exactly the kind of 3D effects you want.

    2D-3D Conversion

The 2D-3D Conversion makes it possible to convert images from DVDs and Blu-ray Discs into 3D with natural depth perception. So you can watch your prized DVD movie collection in 3D with real-life depth, for even greater viewing enjoyment.

The True to Cinema Picture Concept

Panasonic has worked with Hollywood film studios at a laboratory that we have maintained in Hollywood over a long period of time to research image reproduction technologies. These activities have enabled us to accumulate the know-how necessary to faithfully reproduce original movie images on Blu-ray Discs. Now, we have applied these advanced 2D technologies directly to 3D movie reproduction, to achieve truly beautiful images with even more lifelike realism, depth and texture.

    Skype Video Messaging

Quick access to the menu screen

You can instantly access the Skype menu screen by simply pressing the Skype button on the remote control. This is very handy because it lets you easily access the menu screen even while you're watching a TV program or movie.

    Incoming Ringtones

While watching a TV program or movie, a ringtone from the player tells you that you have a call. The ringtone also rings during standby mode.

*The incoming call can not be received during Blu-ray Disc playback

    Auto Answering Video Message

Record an original message onto an SD Memory Card* and set it as your answering voice message. The message will respond automatically when you receive a phone call while you're away.

    Video Mail Recording

Callers can also record messages for you onto the SD Memory Card, so you can confirm the messages when you return home.

    Cinema Surround Plus

The Virtual Speakers created by Cinema Surround compensate for the lack of a surround effect to provide natural, smooth surround sound. Starting with the 2011 models, the same number of Virtual Speakers are arranged in the vertical direction as in the horizontal direction. This offers an enhanced surround effect not only horizontally but also vertically, so you can enjoy your favorite movies with a level of dynamic surround sound that you've never before experienced.

*Rear speakers have wireless capability with the SH-FX71.

    Amp
    ARC
    Clear Sound Digital Amplifier

The Clear Sound Digital Amplifier analyzes the difference between the input and output audio signals, and makes the necessary adjustments to produce an output signal with the same low distortion as the input signal. This results in sound that is highly faithful to the original sound source.

    Built-in Wi-Fi System

A Wi-Fi system is built right into the main unit, so you can enjoy VIERA CAST and BD-Live content without having to connect the Blu-ray Disc player with a LAN cable or wireless LAN adaptor.

*A wireless LAN environment is required.

    ARC (Audio Return Channel)

The home theater system is compatible with the ARC (Audio Return Channel) feature. ARC makes it possible to receive audio signals from the TV, on top of the preexisting HDMI function of sending audio/video signals to the TV with just one cable. This feature simplifies connection by eliminating the audio cable connection between the TV audio output and the main unit's audio input.

    * ARC compatible TV is required.

    BTT370
    VIERA CAST

VIERA CAST has been further enhanced with CinemaNow and VUDU, which allow you to stream movies. You can also access other content from the special VIERA CAST screen. And you can check weather and stock information on other sites.

Great product, definitely reccomended! : Panasonic SC-BTT370 5.1 Channel 3D Blu-ray Cinema Surround Home Entertainment System

We just bought this as our first home theater theory and so far the sound potential has been excellent. We also enjoy the apps included (mainly the Pandora app) to listen to music.

Set-up was fairly simple, although the basic instructions do not comprise instructions for connecting a Dvr/set-top cable box/etc. And that requires some added steps and someone else Hdmi or optical cable to make all the connections.

But there are several things that are indeed disappointing to me. Although there is a Usb port, it does not appear to recognize any Usb devices I have attached (two Wd external hard drives and a Philips Mp3 player).According to their online tech withhold the Usb port "is only for a wireless Lan adaptor. It is not for connecting anything else." This is strange, because this theory is already wireless.

This theory does does have an Sd card slot, but the tech withhold indicates that it only supports four file types: Mpeg2, Avchd, Jpeg and Mpo. This means that the Sd card reader will not play Mov, Mp4, Mp3, Avi, Rm or any of the other very coarse multimedia file types. So far, this theory has been unable to recognize any of the three Sd cards I have tried to use. I think they need to be "formatted" first. So much for plug-and-play; you will not be able to take the Sd card from your camcorder and plug it in to watch your movies.

A value item : Coby DVD938 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Black)

On the surface, this product seems to be pretty good at first. Then once it is all hooked up, things turn a bit. The first thing you have to do is make sure you get all the settings exact or you won't get Dolby Surround on the external input.

The second thing I found out and it still bugs me is that it won't hold the last "source" setting after you put it on standby. There are three source settings; Dvd, Radio and Line. I use Line 90% of the time. But every time I shut the principles down at night and then start it up again the next day, I have to turn the source to line again. This is genuinely just poor design.

The third problem is on some Dvds it will skip and not play them. I notion I had a bad Dvd until I bought my Blu-ray player a few weeks later and the Dvd played fine on that.

Overall, the sound is great but I wouldn't count on it for playing all Dvds well.
